Review: Mother of all energy drinks.

Well this is a small first time review of something because it was there, I was there and well it was cheap.
What I’m talking about is Coca Cola’s second attempt at the energy drink market, AKA Mother version 2.0

Now as I’m a gamer, naturally the assumption is that I consume energy drinks, and in this case that’d be right, I do, fairly constantly with the occasional day where I don’t drink them.
They are my lifeblood, or something to that matter.

Not only do I drink them, but I go out of my way when I see a new one to try it to see if anything can top my choices of V or Red Eye, and naturally they usually disappoint.

So tonight I went to the supermarket with the intention to buy some supplies and possibly my second bottle of V (I forgot the first one that I purchased at the fish and chip shop.)

What should I see before my eyes, but a big black can called Mother.

Now the majority of people who’ve tried the initial version in the white can will attest it’s absolutely foul, a failed experiment by Coca Cola, though I’ve heard if you think of apples while drinking it that it makes sense.

So what do we have but a big black can claiming it’s “completely reformulated” and it “tastes nothing like the old one!”

It also basically sounds like if you drink anything else, you’re a girlyman and a pussy.

Anyway, now on to what people have been waiting for, what it tastes like.
At this point I haven’t even opened it, so here I go.

Can opened like any other, no extreme smells or explosions.

Getting closer it seems to smell like a generic guarana drink, which makes sense as it contains guarana extract.

And now to lift this huge black thing up to my lips in a non homo-erotic way and taste it.

Hmm, well it doesn’t seem offensive to the mouth on first taste, is similar to pretty much every generic energy drink.

Bubbles hit the front of my tongue so I’m tasting with the back, and well it seems ok.

It’s nothing special, but it’s nothing horrible either.

Looking at it I’ve a feeling it could work quite nicely for jager bombs as it’s 500ml, generic, bubbly, sweet, all those things.

It looks like Coca Cola might have found something and implemented it right.

  • Calling people weak if they drink an alternative.
  • Xbox huge can of 500ml, not much shorter than a V bottle, but much larger than the 440ml cans that other companies are using.
  • Tastes nothing like the old one much as their claim.
  • Tastes nothing like Black V, AKA coffee flavoured V.
  • Similar pricing to a bottle of V
  • Nothing like the old drink.

So there you go, cheap, generic tasting energy drink in a huge can.

So if you’re a size-queen and want a lot of the stuff, go for it.

Now to see if I can get it in a four pack or something, could just come in handy at a LAN.

So have no fear, drink it, mix it with alcoholic drinks, go crazy with it, it’s good shit.

Now to finish the can, if any negative impacts happen due to it, I’ll be sure to post them.

Well it has been a long and sleepless past week.

First I turned 27 as I already posted. I managed to get a Boost for my birthday and all, so kinda special.

Then over the next few days I had issues with getting up late and stuff, eventually staying up from 9:30pm on wednesday night all the way till thursday night when I crashed out totally.

Friday it was when the Beerkips struck. Suffice to say the turnout was larger than expected.

Let’s see, that night a had around 3 vodka and Vs, a sip of peppermint vodka (that stuff is hideously vile, transmission fluid would be better) and of course a Jager Bomb.
Not exactly a heavy night of drinking, but then I don’t usually touch alcohol.

A good night indeed.
Not to mention it was fun watching the normals start to walk in to the bar (270 Russell Street, So Bar, go there) and then walk out when they realised the roleplaying/lanning/channing crowd alongside the metal backing tracks.

There was also fire.

Of course I only got around 3 hours sleep that night as brutalis crashed at my house on the spare bed before wanting to try and get to his fiance’s place by 11… then of course I went to help run my Mage: The Awakening game at the same bar that evening, before heading to the Requiem game before piking out.

I crashed early that night due to a headache and got around 12 hours sleep prior to packing my gear on sunday morning and driving to south gippsland for a lan.

I’m not really sure what the lan was called, other than it was in Leongatha with a bunch of people I haven’t really seen in years, but it was awesome.

I will expand further on things when I need to, but that’s good coverage methinks.

Also R4N is good at spilling drinks over everybody, and Wolfmother is good at not holding his alcohol within himself.

Cubed… I am Cubed… Cubed I am!

This is just a small post to inform the world that as of an hour ago, I am Cubed.

Now for those of you without a clue it’s simple, 3 to the power of 3. AKA 3 Cubed.

This is also my current age today. Though technically I should wait another 10 hours or so, I don’t care.

It’s my birthday and I am 3^3.

So far I have received some decent quality wool slacks and a fancy black shirt I can wear when I go out and stuff.

And thus I remind you all, that birthday celebrations will be on the 6th, not before, not after, but the 6th.

Alas that date isn’t magical, but what can I do, my age will just have to suffice.

So go to the So Bar on 270 Russell street on Friday, and enjoy my being Cubed.

Birthday Beerkips 3^3: Fuck Yeah!

I’ll make this quick and simple as I am eating chicken kievs right now and don’t want them to get cold.

On Monday I turn 3 cubed, or for the less geeky, 27.

This is a significant number for me, so I figure I might as well advertise for people to come and celebrate it with me.

Most days of the week don’t work, as people need to work and study, thus I selected Friday the 6th of June as the night of Beer.

It’s going to be held at the So Bar at 270 Russell Street from around 6pm, until something like 1am.

Watershed… I must have it!

Well I’ve just sat here for near on an hour with my speakers cranked listening to Opeth’s latest offering of sonic delights, Watershed, and I have only one thing to say to sum it up: I will be buying this album.

Now in this day and age of fast internet, huge quotas and excessive CD prices, there isn’t really much of an incentive to shell out for music.

See if the bands actually got much of the money being raked in from physical sales, then maybe I might be interested, but to be honest that’s just not the case.

So like the majority of people I take alternative methods in order to encounter new music, and for awhile it was Pandora, before the record companies complained they weren’t getting enough revenue from international users and blocked it off.

So when I say I will buy an album at the overly inflated prices we have to deal with these days, to put it in perspective it’s a big thing.

These days when I buy a cd, I’m almost certainly going to take it straight home and rip it to FLAC and then stash it away on a shelf or something, as truth be told I do all my listening digitally such as via FOOBAR2k or my iPod (Rockbox FTW). So utilising such a fragile medium like CD isn’t in my best interests.

So whilst I may have obtained this album without going through the appropriate channels, I will be buying a copy this Thursday when my pay goes through.

So about the album itself.
It’s the kind you need to listen to at a decent volume through decent equipment and not some shitty little iPod earbuds. Get yourself some good headphones at the least with a respectable bass response and all that.

Then make sure you have some snacks and drinks on hand, turn off your phone and so on, queue the album up, and then unleash it.

I mean I’m considering it their best release to date.

To put things in perspective, I first heard Damnation, before going back to such things as Blackwater Park.
This influenced my opinion of them.

Ghost Reveries was all very well and good, but I don’t feel it was anywhere near as on the mark.

So if you like Opeth, get your hands on Watershed ASAP and decide for yourself, it is the real stuff of gods.

And a message to you folks at the RIAA and MPAA and other such leeches, whilst CD Single sales may be down (funny, selling a cd with one main track on it plus a bunch of shit remixes and half-arsed b-sides for half the price of an album isn’t worth our time,) compare that to album sales.
Then realise that bands are shifting to alternative distribution methods as most recently demonstrated by Nine Inch Nails on Ghosts.

Jacking up the prices and gouging the artists doesn’t sell CDs.
Placing copy protection on things we’ve paid good money for doesn’t sell CDs.
Such methods have been proven time and again to not work.

I don’t have fuckloads of disposable income, so I have to be a bit more select about what I buy.

Watershed is an example of the quality you should aspire to, people will buy it.

And now I should probably go and wait for the men in suits to come to my door demanding PC.

Beerkips: The Returning… Fuck Yeah!

Well as posted previously, tonight was Beerkips night.

I arrived there later than intended as I need to take the rubbish out, then go and buy some basic consumables (you cannot have sammages without bread.)

So I got there after 8, now this may not seem all that late to you, but it’s later than I planned as I walked all the way from Richmond Station to the base of Eureka Tower.

Why did I walk all that distance, you ask.
The answer is simple, emos. Or rather one particular ex-emo who decided that playing Chicken with trains was a really good idea.
Protip: When a large hunk of mainly metal is heading towards you at around 100k/h, move to the side. The Train always wins.

Official reasoning for the delay for Defective Signals, and it was even suggested by the train-driver to catch a tram the rest of the way.

What a brilliant idea this was. Except the number of people who decided to follow his advice. Packed trams are not fun for someone who doesn’t like being around people to that level.
Trams obviously weren’t an option.

Unlike some people, however, I chose not to walk along the tram-lines off into the city.
Instead I decided to cross the river and follow it to my destination, also on that side of the river.

Things I learned on my journey: People like wearing Essendon football tops. The river curves multiple ways. People who watch Korn in concert all look the same. And Templestowe is around 43 kilometres from the Arts Centre.

Eventually I got to my destination, there I found the following: R4N, Zardoz, Wolfmother, Sando and Deadeye.
There may have been some others but it’s not important (if you feel offended I missed you from this initial list, harass me on IRC or something and I will add you.

Later on we got Hider and his furfag friends (yes, they are furries, and furries are bad, but not as bad as plushies, as at least furs aren’t plush toys), Miniwalks, Zwan, Ithuriel and Spectre (again if I missed you out, tell me.)

Many shenanigans were had and talked about and such serious topics as these:
If you mix beer with anti-beer you get fire, and then ninjas can’t catch you as you’re on fire.
Is the original Castle Wolfenstein 8 bit or not?
You just lost the game.
Rick Astley
Tone-deaf karaoke.
Chocolat beer.
Why won’t TC learn that he can’t win if he keeps antagonising Miniwalks.
Etc.

Eventually everyone left except Zardoz, Ithuriel and myself.
Around that time my good friend z_brutalis and his girlfriend showed up, it has been her birthday and I finally got to meet the girl who’d made him her bitch.

Last drinks were called and we decided to relocate towards the food on Swanston street.

On the way, just outside the beer cafe, z_brutalis proposed to his girlfriend, and she said yes, levelling up to being his fiancé.

We made our way along the river to where we could ascend to street-level and discovered something amazing: there are real live fish surviving in the Yarra!

Eventually we made our way to where we could obtain biomass, and the newly engaged z_brutalis offered to drive me home, rather than me catch the Niterider.
Thus I spent some more time hanging out with the two engaged youngsters.

You have not experienced anything as frightening as being in a car that decides to keep pace with 4 other P-platers at speed… I just don’t trust what other drivers will do.

Eventually we made it back to my place, chatted for awhile, and they left off to their next destination, and I came in here, and well started blogging this.

Beerkips… fuck yeah!

Well tonight I did something different, rather than staying at home watching anime and playing video-games, or hanging out with a cool Cranbourne bird, I decided to mix things up a little.

I decided to go to my first Respawn Drinks Night, aka Beerkips, or Moar.

Now my first challenge was simple, locate the Eureka Tower. Not as easy as it might seem.
You see I have an unusual form of domestic blindness, unless I’m specifically looking for something and have it pointed out to me such as on a map or with pictures, I’ll just totally over-look things.
Such was the case with the Eureka Tower.

I’ve passed by it many times, yet until tonight had never seen it, despite it towering over it’s nearest opposition in a manner that’s hard to miss, yet miss it I did.

So I googled and so on and got pictures and planned out my route.

Next task was simple, food.
I chose the lazy but smart option: I called the local Fish & Chippery and placed an order of Flake for me to pick up on the way to the station.

Not only did I time it well, I timed it excellently, arriving at the station at roughly 1 minute remaining.

The trip into the city was uneventful.

Eventually I got into the city, stopped off for some cash at flinders and elizabeth, then proceeded through the underpass, across a bridge and around some corners to the base of Eureka Tower.
The Belgian Beer Cafe was right in front of me and was indeed my destination.

Upon arriving I was spotted by one Tankii, who waved quite emphatically, drawing my attention to the motley crew of Respawn admins, regulars, and some people I’d never seen before.

There were many shenanigans, what with the size of Zardoz lenses, Spiteful’s body armour, Sando’s being a Genuine Asian Male, and R4N’s contagious state of being.

A lot of photos were taken, a lot of beer consumed, and the one known as Deadeye drank what he called a Period, it was red with cranberry, and he’d been assured it’d help with it’s namesake.

There was much rickrolling to be had, with R4N’s phone being hijacked.

There were some card-games where Sando, Spiteful, some guy who compared a drink of tasting like anus, and myself abducting cards… many lulz indeed.

Eventually though we got to the 1am mark, were booted out passively and started going our separate ways.
Some caught taxis, the rest of us journeyed to the Swanston KFC for food, where upon I opted out along with Spiteful and we caught our respective taxis.

Nightrider trips don’t change much, though there were a couple of german girls opposite me.
Which leads me to here, where I’m home typing a blog entry.

There will be photos of beerkips no doubt online soon enough and I shall link to them.

But in future, we need more for the beerkips, because moar!

New domain, is all mine, muahahahaha…

Yup, that’s right kids, today I purchased this wonderful brand spanking new domain address, isn’t it awesome?

I figured that after all these years of piggybacking on someone else’ domain, that I might as well pick up one for myself.
Now my nameservers aren’t the most awesome as they don’t seem to support cnames, but other than that fairly good.

So now I can post generic crap about most things onto a place that’s my very own.

And speaking of generic crap:

Once again on a Thursday night I hung out at my friend Bruno’s bar, the So Bar (at 270 Russell street in the CBD, available for functions).
I got to have a few games of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, teaming up with Bruno vs the CPU and pwning.

Of course naturally no Thursday night would be complete without a dose of Family Guy and American Dad and a little SGA.

Also I watched me some new Bleach 166 action. Not the HD rip, never the HD rip as mentioned in my previous post, it is a troll and will cause physical pain and isn’t amusing in the least.
Poor Grimmjow Jaggerjack, didn’t realise he was going to get pwned at full Resurrecion level.

But what is it with anime and fight-scenes that requires you to have an inexhaustible supply of pillars or mountains, rocks and so on? Smashing them repeatedly is meant to show you’re hard-core?

I guess so… and now methinks it’s time to smash something up myself, maybe a little Soulstorm, or maybe some Hellgate, haven’t decided yet.

Well, an interesting day yesterday (well technically but I haven’t been to bed yet.)

First up in the morning I got a new electronic ignition module installed in my car. Now my car works again, at least for now it does. $300 down from that.

And of course the website for Australian Camarilla Conclave (ACC) went totally live and stuff and well suffice to say I’m registered and paid for, another $80 down from that.

Oh and today Transformers opens, so I’m supposedly going to go and meet up with a bunch of people from Respawn (7th and 8th of July at Bundoora, well worth the money.)  at Northlands to go and see it, supposedly around 9am (so not looking forward to another early morning.) If you go, look for the geeky looking people, that’s us.

And I been having much fun in guildwars lately.
